Inherited from Old Ruthenian осмъна́дцать (osmnádcatʹ), from earlier осмъна́десѧть (osmnádesjatʹ). Compounded from во́сем (vósjem) +‎ на (na) +‎ дзе́сяць (dzjésjacʹ), literally eight on ten. Compare with Old Church Slavonic осмь на дєсѧтє (osmĭ na desęte). Other cognates include Ukrainian вісімна́дцять (visimnádcjatʹ) and Russian восемна́дцать (vosemnádcatʹ).
