From Ancient Greek διασπορά (diasporá, dispersion), from διασπείρω (diaspeírō, to scatter), from δια- (dia-, prefix indicating motion across or in all directions) + σπείρω (speírō, to sow). Compare Russian диа́спора (diáspora), Belarusian дыя́спара (dyjáspara).
