Relative noun (nisba) composed of عَوَار (ʕawār, “defect”) +‎ ـِيَّة (-iyya), from the root ع و ر (ʕ-w-r) related to lacunae.

عَوَارِيَّة • (ʕawāriyya) f

(accounting) damage in transit, average, the occurrence of transported goods being lost

  يقصد بلفظ العوارية كل خسارة جزئية وهذا يعنى أن أى خسارة غير الخسارة الكلية تعتبر
  By the term average any partial loss is meant and this implies that any loss other than total loss is considered.
