Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Classical Persian دروغ (durōğ), from Old Persian 𐎭𐎼𐎢𐎥 (drauga); cognate with Tamil தரோகா (tarōkā). Compare with Sanskrit द्रुग्ध (drugdha, “an injurious or malevolent act”) and German Betrug (“deception”).
