From Arabic ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ (ṯamāniyata ʕašara). By surface analysis, tmint +‎ -ax. Compare Moroccan Arabic تمنتاش (tmantāš), Egyptian Arabic تمنتاشر (tamantāšar).
