From the group's former Arabic-language name, الدَّوْلَةُ الْإِسْلَامِيَّة فِي الْعِرَاق (ad-dawlatu l-ʔislāmiyya(t) fī l-ʕirāq, literally “the Islamic State in Iraq”).
