Etymology[edit]

Clearly related to κύπτω (kúptō, to stoop). The word has been linked with Lithuanian kuprà (hump) and Old High German hovar (hump). According to Beekes, the variation "κυφ-/κυπ-" points to a Pre-Greek origin.
