Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Maybe from Proto-Indo-European *h₂welh₁- (hair, wool), like Latin vellus (fleece), or from the same root of Ancient Greek εὔληρα (eúlēra, rein), Latin lōrum (thong) and Old Armenian լար (lar, rope). Beekes finds both these proposals unconvincing.
