Inherited from Byzantine Greek χιόνι (khióni), from Koine Greek χιόνιον (khiónion), diminutive of Ancient Greek χιών (khiṓn, snow),[1] from Proto-Hellenic *kʰiṓn, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéyōm. Compare Mariupol Greek шон (šon).
