Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Ancient Greek κτύπημα (ktúpēma) ("sound of a bang") with a regular change [kt] > [xt] frem verb κτυπέω (ktupéō)/κτυπώ (ktupṓ) (modern χτυπάω (chtypáo), past tense stem χτυπη- + -μα (-ma). Sense "blow, hitting" since mediaeval times.[1]
