Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Maybe from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer-, the same root of χορδή (khordḗ, guts, intestine) and Latin hernia (protruded viscus). However, Beekes finds this proposal unconvincing.
