Inherited from Old East Slavic Воронажь (Voronažĭ), Воронѧжь (Voronęžĭ), Воронежь (Voronežĭ). Vasmer connects with вороно́й (voronój, black) and compares with Воронега (Voronega), a river flowing into Lake Ladoga.
