Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Mordvinic *ašťəms, whence also Moksha ащемс (aščems).
Possibly related to *äźə- (which is from Proto-Uralic *ëśe- (“to exist, be located”)). Compare dialectal Erzya eščems.[1]
