Etymology[edit]

From *aqa ini (elder and elder brothers), from Proto-Turkic *(i)āka (elder brother) + Proto-Turkic *ini (younger brother). Synchronously, equivalent to ағай (ağay, elder brother) +‎ эне (ene, younger brother).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (aqa ini, elder and younger brothers); Kyrgyz агайын (agayın), агайин (agayin), агайни (agayni); Kazakh ағайын (ağaiyn, a way to address a male congregation), Uzbek ogʻayni (brothers; male friends), Uyghur ئاغا-ئىنى (agha-'ini, younger and elder brothers).
