Джейра́н

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed via a Turkic language from Persian جیران (jêrân), from Middle Mongol [script needed] (ǰērän, antelope),[1] from Proto-Turkic *yẹgren (yellow, chestnut).

Compare Azerbaijani ceyran (gazelle), Kyrgyz жейрен (jeyren, goitered gazelle), Turkish ceylan (antelope, gazelle), Uzbek jayron (goitered gazelle).

Also compare Russian дзере́н (dzerén, dzeren, Mongolian gazelle), from Kalmyk зеерң (zeerñ, antelope) or Mongolian зээр (zeer, gazelle), from Proto-Mongolic *jexeren, commonly derived from Proto-Turkic *yẹgren (yellow, chestnut), whence also Kazakh жайран (jairan, dzeren, Mongolian gazelle).
