From Proto-Iranian, from Proto-Indo-Iranian, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰwer- (gate, door). Cognate with Persian در (dar), Hindustani द्वार (dvār) / دوار (dvār), English door, German Tür, Armenian դուռ (duṙ), Irish doras and Russian дверь (dver’).
