from Proto-Turkic *eńe (mother), a front vowel parallel to *ana (mother).

Cognate with Tatar әни (äni, mother), Siberian Tatar инә (mother), Kyrgyz эне (ene, mother), Southern Altai эне (ene, mother), Kazakh ене (ene, mother-in-law), Yakut ийе (iye, mother); Khakas иней (iney, old woman), etc.
