From Old Turkic keδim (clothes), from Proto-Turkic verb stem *keδ- (to dress, to wear). Earliest attested in Qarakhanid Turkic.

Cognate with Kazakh киім (kïim), Kyrgyz, Southern Altai, кийим (kiyim), Tatar кием (kiyem), Uzbek kiyim (clothing) etc.
