Serbo-Croatian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ledьnъ. Cognate with Russian ледный (lednyj), Czech lední, Polish lodny.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /lêdan/
  • Hyphenation: лед‧ан

Adjective[edit]

ле̏дан (definite ле̏днӣ, comparative леднији, Latin spelling lȅdan)

  1. (relational) ice; icy, glacial
  2. frozen (of water)
  3. cold, frigid, chilled
  4. (figuratively) coldhearted, unfeeling
  5. (figuratively) (of fear, doubt, or surprise) immobilizing

Usage notes[edit]

Historically, ле̏дан primarily meant “of or relating to ice”, while ле̏ден primarily meant “made of ice”, but each was often used for the other; today, ле̏ден is by far the more common of the two for either meaning.
