Russian[edit]

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

покры́шка (pokrýškaf inan (genitive покры́шки, nominative plural покры́шки, genitive plural покры́шек)

  1. (automotive) (tire-)cover, tire
  2. covering

Usage notes[edit]

Strictly speaking, покры́шка refers to a tire in which air is not within the tire itself, but is retained in the space between the tire and the rim by an airtight seal, and which today is often called a "tubeless tire." This is distinguished from a ши́на (šína), which today is often called an "inner tube" (in which an inflatable tube contains air within itself). However, outside of mechanical circles, the words покры́шка and ши́на are often used interchangeably.
