From Proto-Permic *rüći, from Proto-Uralic *repäs, ultimately borrowed from an Indo-Iranian language, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HlawpaHćás (compare Ossetian рувас (ruvas) and Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬞𐬌 (raopi)). Cognates include Eastern Mari рывыж (ryvyž), Erzya ривезь (ŕiveź) and Finnish repo.

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian руч (ruć) and Udmurt ӟичы (dźićy).
