Etymology[edit]

From тхьэ (tḥɛ, God) +‎ бытырбыф (bətərbəf, Petersburg). Literally means “may God send you to Petersburg”. Saint Petersburg is a city in Russia. The Circassians used this because Saint Petersburg is far from the Caucasus and very cold. The meaning of this word is that may God send you to a place so far away (Saint Petersburg) that you may never return.
