From Proto-Permic *tu̇rp, from Proto-Uralic *turpa. Cognates include Eastern Mari тӱрвӧ (türvö) and Erzya турва (turva).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian тырп (tyrp) and Udmurt тырпы (tyrpy).
