Bashkir[edit]

Өйрәкморондар.

Etymology[edit]

Composed of өйрәк (öyrək, duck) +‎ морон (moron, nose). Calque of Russian утконо́с (utkonós).

Compare with Tatar үрдәкборын (ürdäkborın, platipus), Uzbek oʻrdakburun (platipus), Azerbaijani ördəkburun (platipus) - these cognates are made up of components that are etymologically equivalent to those in the Bashkir term.

Also compare Kazakh үйректұмсық (üirektūmsyq, platipus), Uyghur ئۆردەكتۇمشۇق (ördektumshuq, platipus) - these two have a different second component, which is equivalent to Bashkie томшоҡ (tomşoq).
