Etymology[edit]

The earlier form is Ալլահվերդի (Allahverdi), from Turkic: compare Turkish Allahverdi, Azerbaijani Allahverdi (literally given by God). The city is named after a certain Allahverdi, a 17th century leader of a nomadic Turkic tribe called Borčalu, which gave its name to the Borchali region of Georgia.
