From Northwestern Iranian, possibly a shortening of Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬯𐬋𐬑𐬱𐬀𐬚𐬭𐬀 (vasōxšaθra, having/with command at will, in complete command). The same name is transliterated as Ancient Greek Οὐάσακης (Ouásakēs), Βασσάκης (Bassákēs), Latin Vasaces. Used among Armenians in the 1–19th centuries.
