Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The root is ար- (ar-) (compare the imperative արի՛ (arí)), from Proto-Indo-European *r̥-, zero-grade of *er-, *or-. Cognates include Sanskrit ऋणोति (ṛṇoti, to move), अर्णस् (árṇas, wave, flood), Ancient Greek ὄρνυμι (órnumi), Latin orior, origo, and Old English rinnan (English run).

յառնեմ (yaṙnem)  (aorist indicative յարեայ)

  1. to rise, to arise, to get up, to rise or stand up, to rise again
    անդրէն յառնելandrēn yaṙnel ― to rise anew, to get up again
    յարեաւ միւս եւս խնդիրyareaw miws ews xndir ― another question arose
    արի՛arí ― arise!
    օ՛ն արիքṓn arikʿ ― get up!
    արի՛ք ընդառաջ նրանaríkʿ əndaṙaǰ nran ― go to meet him
    յարեաւ յաթոռոյնyareaw yatʿoṙoyn ― he rose from his seat, he got up from his chair

  2. to awake, to be roused, to wake out of sleep
  3. to resuscitate, to come to life again, to live again
