From the figurative use of պարտիմ (partim, I owe).

պարտեմ (partem)  (aorist indicative պարտեցի)

  1. (transitive) to worst, to overcome, to vanquish, to conquer, to subjugate, to subdue
    պարտել զչարչարանսpartel zčʿarčʿarans — to suffer with fortitude, to bear up against pain or torments
  2. (in the mediopassive, intransitive) to be conquered, to have the worst of it
    յապշութիւն պարտելyapšutʿiwn partel — to be confounded, astounded, astonished, surprised
    պարտեցաւ պատերազմնpartecʿaw paterazmn — a part was subdued
