Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian *spʾd (*spāy), from Old Persian *𐎿𐎱𐎠𐎭 (*spāda-), borrowed from Median *spāda- (army), from Proto-Iranian *spāda-. The form սպար (spar), which has been survived in compound սպարապետ (sparapet), is from Parthian *spāδ (compare Manichaean Parthian ʿspʾd (ispāδ)). The form սպահ (spah) is borrowed from another Middle Iranian language, possibly via Middle Persian 𐭮𐭯𐭠𐭧 (spāh) (> Persian سپاه (sepāh)) or Parthian.
