Cognates include Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬁 (kaēnā, punishment, revenge), Middle Persian kyn' (kēn, revenge, enmity), Persian کین (kīn), Ancient Greek ποινή (poinḗ, blood money, punishment), Lithuanian kaina (price) and Old Church Slavonic цѣна (cěna), Russian цена (cena).
