Etymology[edit]

From Classical Syriac ܟܘܪܐ (kūrāʼ, melting pot; furnace), of Semitic origin. Compare Hebrew כור (kūr, melting pot, furnace) and Arabic كور (kūr). The Semitic word was also borrowed into Persian as کوره (kure) and into Georgian as ქურა (k’ura).

քուրայ (kʿuray) (singular genitive քուրայի, plural genitive քուրայից)

  1. crucible, melting pot; cupel; furnace where metal is melted
  2. furnace in a bathhouse
