Hebrew[edit]

Etymology 1[edit]

From בַּל (bál, without) +‎ עֲדֵי (adéi, until).

Preposition[edit]

בִּלְעֲדֵי (bil'adéi)

  1. without, in the absence of
    Synonyms: בְּלִי (b'lí), לְלֹא (l'ló), בְּלֹא (b'ló)
אני לא יכול לעשות את זה בלעדייך.
aní ló yakhól la'asót ét zé bil'adékha.
I can't do this without you.
Usage notes[edit]
  • The preposition בִּלְעֲדֵי is typically only used in its inflected forms, that is, when its object is a personal pronoun. In other cases, the preposition בְּלִי (b'lí) is usually used instead. (For example, “without Ruth” is בְּלִי רוּת (b'lí rút), while “without her” is בִּלְעָדֵיהָ (bil'adéiha).) In a sense, therefore, בִּלְעֲדֵי can be said to provide the inflected forms of בְּלִי.
Inflection[edit]

Etymology 2[edit]

A Modern coinage from the above preposition, with the adjective suffix ־י ().
