מַעֲרָב m (ma'aráv, west) +‎ ־וֹן (-on, suffix forming denominative nouns), from the root ע־ר־ב ('-r-b) forming words relating to west, and famous for עֶרֶב (érev, evening) (because the sun sets in the west).
