Etymology[edit]

From עברי (ivrí) which is connected to עבר (avár, cross over). Abraham was called an Ivri because he was from among those who crossed over into Canaan (it was a word for immigrant) The language of this particular "Ivri" was עברית' ie: "Ivrit".
