Etymology[edit]

From مَسَاء (masāʔ, evening). Sense of “become” resembles other verbs of similar meaning derived from different times of day; compare أَصْبَحَ (ʔaṣbaḥa), بَاتَ (bāta), أَضْحَى (ʔaḍḥā), all meaning "become."
