Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Arabic إِنْجِيل (ʔinjīl), itself from Classical Syriac ܐܘܢܓܠܝܘܢ (ʾewwangellīōn) or a variant thereof. Doublet of انگلیون (angalyun, Gospel), borrowed directly from Syriac, which this Arabic word displaced.
