From Sanskrit ऋक्ष (ṛkṣa), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hŕ̥ćšas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ŕ̥tḱos (bear). Cognate with Kalasha ič̣, Hindi रीछ (rīch), Persian خرس (xers), French ours, Spanish oso.
