From Middle Persian 𐭥𐭠𐭭𐭢 (ʿʾng /⁠vāng⁠/), probably from Proto-Indo-European *wṓkʷs (voice, speech).[1] Akin to Old Armenian վանգ (vang), an Iranian borrowing.
