Etymology[edit]

Akin to Akkadian 𒁀𒋡𒀀𒇻 (ba-qa-a-lu /⁠baqālu⁠/, to sprout, malt) and Ge'ez በቈለ (bäḳʷälä), በቍለ (bäḳʷlä, to sprout). ب ق ر (b-q-r) may be distantly related.
