Location of Khuzestan within Iran

Etymology[edit]

From خوز (xuz, Susia) and ستان (stân, place), meaning land of the Khuzi (Susian) people, the original inhabitants of the region. Alternatively borrowed wholly from Middle Persian 𐭧𐭥𐭰𐭮𐭲𐭭 (ḥʿcstn /hūzestān/, literally land of Hūz), itself from [script needed] (hwc /hūz/) + -stan (-stʾn' /-estān/).

The first component is from Old Persian 𐎢𐎺𐎩 (u-v-j /ʰūvja-/, Elam, Elamite), or from the name of Susa. Etymologically, compare اهواز, the Arabized broken-plural of Middle Persian [script needed] (hwc /hūz/, Susia).
