From Proto-Iranian (compare Old Persian danūg-, Parthian zanax, Avestan zānu), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *jʰanus (compare Sanskrit हनु (hánu)), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵénu- (chin, jaw, cheek), *ǵénus. Compare Armenian ծնոտ (cnot), Lithuanian žándas, Latin gena, Tocharian A śanwem, Welsh gen, English chin.
