Etymology[edit]

From سپر (separ, shield) +‎ ـدیس (dis, -shaped), literally shield-shaped. Coined by the Academy of Persian Language and Literature in 2005 through a Persian calque of Ancient Greek θῠρεοειδής (thureoeidḗs, shield-shaped)
