Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *sïrtlan (hyena); cognate with Bashkir һыртлан (hırtlan), Kyrgyz сырттан (sırttan), Turkmen syrtlan, Uyghur سىرتلان (sirtlan) and Uzbek sirtlon. For the ending, compare آرسلان (arslan, lion), قپلان (kaplan, leopard) and ییلان (yılan, snake).
