Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kaplan (leopard; tiger); cognate with Kazakh қабылан (qabylan) and Turkmen gaplaň. For the ending, compare آرسلان (arslan, lion), صرتلان (sırtlan, hyena) and ییلان (yılan, snake).
