From Middle Persian *‫‪margānag, from Old Persian *‫‪margā + [Term?] (/⁠-ānag‬‬⁠/); compare Middle Persian [script needed] (mlw' /⁠marw⁠/, plant), Parthian [script needed] (mrg /⁠mar‫‪γ‬‬⁠/, prairie), Sogdian [script needed] (mrg /⁠mar‫‪γ‬‬⁠/, prairie), Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬖𐬀 (marəγa‬‬, plant), Persian مرغ (marğ, plant).

The variant مریانه (maryâne) (Hamadan dialect) is influenced by Middle Persian. The variant مرگانه (margâne) (Maryanaj dialect) is an older form influenced by Northwestern Middle Iranian languages.
