Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian hcʾl (hazār) (Manichaean Middle Persian hzʾr), from Proto-Indo-European *(sm̥-)ǵʰéslo-. Akin to Old Armenian հազար (hazar), a Middle Iranian borrowing. Indo-Iranian cognates include Pashto زر (zër), Baluchi ہزار (hazár), Kurdish ههزار (hazār) and Sanskrit सहस्र (sa-hásra).
