Inherited from Middle Persian cyhl (čihr, origin, lineage), from Old Persian *ciθrah (type, form; lineage), borrowed from Old Median *ciθrah, ultimately from Proto-Iranian *ciθráh.

Cognate with Avestan 𐬗𐬌𐬚𐬭𐬀 (ciθra) and a doublet of Old Persian 𐎨𐎡𐏂 (čiçaʰ).
