Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Paisaci Prakrit [Term?] (compare Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀙𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀤𑀺 (chaḍḍadi)), from Sanskrit छर्दति (chardati).

چھَڈّݨا (chaḍḍṇā) (transitive, Gurmukhi spelling ਛੱਡਣਾ)

  1. to let go
    میرے دوپٹّے نُوں چَھڈّ!mere dopṭṭe nūṉ chaḍḍ!Let go off my scarf!
  2. to leave, quit
    کَمّ نُوں چَھڈّݨاkamm nūṉ chaḍḍṇāto quit (your) job
  3. to give up, leave
    آپݨے آل اَوْلاد نُوں کَدی نا چَھڈِّیںāpṇe āl aulād nūṉ kadī nā chaḍḍiīṉDon't ever give up your kids
  4. to release, free
  5. to drop off
    مَینُوں تھاݨے تے زَرا چَھڈّ دےmainūṉ thāṇe te zarā chaḍḍ deCan you drop me off at the police station?
