Etymology[edit]

From the older form *ܥܠܥܐ (ʿelʿā(ʾ)); unattested in Classical Syriac, from Proto-Semitic *ḍlʿ. Compare Arabic ضِلْع (ḍilʿ) and Hebrew צֶלַע (ṣélaʿ).
