From the root ܚ-ܡ-ܥ (IPA(key): /ħ-m-ʕ/) related to fermenting, from Proto-Semitic *ḥmḍ. Compare Arabic حَمْض (ḥamḍ) and Hebrew חָמֵץ (ḥāmēṣ).
